Island Avenue Improvements

Consistent with City of Philadelphia’s Vison Zero priority that provides a collaborative effort to improve traffic safety on City streets, construction has begun on the major reconstruction of Island Avenue in the City’s Eastwick community.  The 1.2-mile project, which stretches from Woodland Avenue to Suffolk Avenue, includes the construction of pedestrian and bus boarding islands, ADA curb ramps, a multi-use trail, curb alignment, and traffic signal upgrades as well as a new traffic signal.  Signage and lighting will be improved along the corridor and the trolley platforms will meet SEPTA’s newly adopted design standards.  The design simplifies the roadway geometry and converts the “service” roads to a landscaped median with a shared bike and pedestrian trail.

G&A leads a team of diverse design professionals and is responsible for overall project management, various design elements, approvals by various governmental agencies including PennDOT, SEPTA, and other City departments.

This project was awarded Number 8 by Roads & Bridges Top 10 Roads for 2024. It was recognized for alignment with the City’s Vision Zero plan, as the project sought to address the safety concerns of the existing corridor, while also improving the functionality of the corridor for the community and commuters.
