In September 2010, the doors of Philadelphia School District’s Creative and Performing Arts High School opened. The stewardship opportunities of schoolyards are often unmatched as potential sites for GSI projects. As the civil engineering consultant, G&A provided survey, site evaluation and planning, civil and stormwater management design, PWD and Zoning approvals, and assistance with USGBC submittals. The 7.2 acres brownfield site incorporated recycled materials in retaining walls and landscaping, rainwater cisterns for water re-use, and a geothermal heating system and vegetated rooftop areas. Stormwater features included rain gardens and underground detention facilities. These sustainable features helped the school earn a LEED® Platinum Certification, the first public high school in the country to earn the designation.
